Notes From The Field: Filming in Oregon and Washington

In Mary Jane Blog, Notes from the Director, Notes from the Field

On October 28th, I returned to my home state of Oregon to film some inspiring “women of weed”, including 3 of the 10 women listed in a recent Huffington Post article about Oregon’s successful female “ganjaprenuers”.

It was also the first time “Mary Janes: The Women of Weed” filmed on a marijuana farm. Previously, we’d filmed in a Colorado hemp field, but this was the first time we filmed on a legitimate “pot farm”, in layperson’s terms.

For those of you who don’t know, “marijuana” and “hemp” are varieties of the plant species Cannabis sativa. However, the US government defines hemp has having less than 0.3% THC. Any plant with higher THC levels is considered “marijuana”.

The “Mary Janes” crew joined the founders of Hifi Farms for a sunrise tour of the property before heading inside to interview Sara Batterby (CEO, Hifi Farms), Leah Maurer (Co-Owner, The Weed Blog) and Madeline Martinez (Owner, World Famous Cannabis Café). Ah Warner (Founder and CEO, Cannabis Basics) joined us as the Washington representative.

This fantastic foursome discussed the highs and lows of being female “ganjapreneurs” in the Oregon and Washington cannabis industries, the focus on corporate responsibility as they grow their businesses, how to speak to children about cannabis, and where we still have work to do with decriminalizing and de-scheduling cannabis.

The following day, Eden Labs, LLC invited us to film in Seattle, WA. Eden Labs are innovators of Hi-Flo CO2 extraction equipment popular with nutraceutical, flavorings and essential oils companies, as well as cannabis concentrate makers. It was wonderful to see the science, technology and design involved in moving the cannabis industry forward, as well as discuss the importance of female leadership and corporate responsibility with CEO AC Braddock.

It was a great way to wrap the Pacific NW shoot for “Mary Janes: The Women of Weed”.

Next week, we’re off to Boston, MA and Oakland, CA to film the “Puffragettes” leading the marijuana legalization campaigns on Election Day.
